Propolis - a sticky miracle
As beekeepers, we all know that bees use propolis to glue together the cracks and spaces in the hive. They also use this substance, made from tree sap and wax, to inhibit the growth of bacteria and other microorganisms in their hives. Propolis, made up of amino acids, vitamins, minerals and flavonoids, make propolis a supplement that might help your immune system. Russian beekeepers raise bees just for propolis for its microbacterial properties.
So instead of tossing the propolis away as you clean the hive, save it to make a tincture that can be used to treat a sore throat, cold sore, or heal it a cut. It has been known to be used in treating burns, blemishes and some articles say it helps prevent cancer. It can be put into salves and hand creams to soothe skin. I put in the dogs water. (With that breath there must be some bacteria to kill and he won't let me brush his teeth.)
You can purchase tinctures at health food stores and markets too for around $12 an ounce.
If you are allergic to bees, you may have the same reaction to propolis, so take care and use caution when considering using this or any alternative treatment. If you are concerned about allergies, have medical condition or pregnant, consult your doctor or health care practitioner regarding the use of propolis.
